Protected forests under subordination of State Forest Resources Agency composes one third of total protected areas of the country. Almost in all regions percentage of reserved territories in forests is higher than nationwide.
A significant percentage of protected forests in Ukraine shows that in forestry there was created strict criteria on the management principles and they fully meet European strategy for the conservation of biological and landscape diversity.
In forests under subordination of State Forest Resources Agency there were established more than 3 thousand territories of different kind of reserved objects with a total area of 1,3 million hectares. The area of reserved territories on subordinated forest lands is 16,8%. Almost in all regions percentage of reserved territories are higher than national reserved territory. In subordination of the State Forest Resources Agency there are 13 environmental institutions, including: 6 nature reserves, 8 national parks and 1 household park.
Protection and maintenance of environmental institutions is provided by special administration with support from the state budget and at the rest of protected areas (small oriented reserves, reserved stows, regional landscape parks etc – at area of 1100 thousand hectares) protection and preservation of natural systems relies on state forest enterprises in charge of them.
