A team from the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine (SFRA) took part in a regional seminar on timber tracking systems and compliance with EU deforestation regulations, which took place in Yerevan as part of the «European Union for Environment» (EU4Environment) program, supported by the World Bank.
«The seminar was organized to help the Eastern Partnership countries implement effective timber tracking systems as a means of controlling illegal logging, improving forest management, and promoting sustainable forestry in accordance with the requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)», - explained Ms Mariana Ostrovska, Head of the International Relations, Science and Public Relations Sector Division at the SFRA.
The seminar gathered representatives from relevant ministries, forestry agencies, research institutions, public organizations, and government bodies of the Eastern Partnership countries. Representatives of the EU Member States and EU institutions also participated in the discussion, as the EU is the main consumer of timber from the Eastern Partnership countries.
Specifically, participants discussed the features of national logging systems, identified the key attributes of a successful timber tracking system, and reviewed examples of implementing such systems, including the creation of a digital chain of custody for timber movement.
«Following the seminar, EU representatives concluded that Ukraine has the most advanced digital control system for timber circulation. Our country is also viewed as an important exporter of timber and timber products, accounting for 10-12% of the EU market. And according to international experts, compliance with the EUDR requirements opens up an opportunity for us to expand our market in the European Union and become a larger and more powerful supplier», - Mariana Ostrovska emphasized.
Background Information: the «European Union for Environment» (EU4Environment) program helps the Eastern Partnership countries preserve natural capital and improve the environmental well-being of people.
