State Forest Resources Agency attracts international support for Ukraine’s forestry sector

Head of the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine, Viktor Smal, outlined the international projects through which Ukrainian foresters are receiving essential assistance and support.

«We continue to attract expertise, technologies, and support from leading countries and international organizations to modernize and develop Ukraine’s forestry sector. The State Forest Resources Agency is currently involved in the implementation of a number of important international projects. All of them share a common goal: to make Ukrainian forestry more resilient, modern, transparent, and fully integrated into European approaches to forest governance», - Viktor Smal stated.

Germany

«Supporting the Planning and Implementation of Multifunctional Sustainable Forest Management in Ukraine». This project supports the State Forest Resources Agency and its subordinate institutions in implementing multifunctional sustainable forest management based on reliable data.

«Training and Practical Course on Close-to-Nature Forest Management». Ukrainian foresters gain practical experience in close-to-nature silviculture, forest health monitoring, and ecological stabilization of forest ecosystems.

«Improving Forest Management Planning through Strengthening Local Capacity». The project focuses on the digitalization of Ukraine’s Forest Cadastre, as well as technical and operational support for restoring the functionality of the Ukrainian State Forest Inventory and Planning Enterprise (Ukrderzhlisproekt).

Finland

«Sustainable Supply of Forest Biomass for Energy Production in Ukraine». This project aims to develop modern systems for managing and monitoring forest resources to ensure sustainable energy production from forest biomass.

Czech Republic

«Strengthening Ukraine’s Forest Monitoring Capacity for Harmonization with EU Standards». The project is aimed at improving the quality of forest data to support the implementation of EU and FAO strategies for forestry development and support in Ukraine.

European Union

«EU4Environment Programme». Under this initiative, forest and ecosystem services undergo baseline valuation, while investment and financing opportunities for the forestry sector are being assessed.

«Inclusive and Sustainable Value Chains in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry». The project supports the development of a new Forest Code of Ukraine, harmonization of forestry legislation with EU standards, modernization of forest planning, and digital transformation of the sector.

Forestry Component of the IPRSA 3 Project аs part of the project «Institutional and Policy Reform for Small-Scale Agriculture» (IPRSA 3), work is underway on the preparation of the necessary legal and regulatory framework, as well as the exchange of experience with other countries.

World Bank Global PROGREEN Program

«Supporting Ukraine’s Forest Governance, EU Alignment and Climate Change Mitigation». This initiative provides assistance in implementing institutional reforms in the forestry sector and enhancing the adaptation of forests to climate change.

Sweden

«Capacity Building for the Integration of EU Policies into Ukraine’s Forestry Sector». The project prepares the State Forest Resources Agency and its subordinate organizations for the implementation of European regulations and policies in the forestry sector through training programs, online courses, and knowledge exchange activities.

Switzerland

«From Crisis to Resilience through Close-to-Nature Forestry in Ukraine». The project includes the establishment of demonstration marteloscope sites, the development of a practical guide on close-to-nature forestry, training activities, and the creation of a national cooperation network for sustainable forest management.
