With the Assistance of the Czech Republic, a Modern Computer Laboratory for Studying Earth Remote Sensing Methods Has Opened

The National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine hosted an international workshop on implementing best practices for forest monitoring using Earth Remote Sensing (ERS) technologies. This is part of the Ukrainian-Czech project, "Strengthening Ukraine's Capacity in Forest Monitoring to Align with EU Standards."

Leading Ukrainian forestry experts and specialists from the Czech Republic discussed the impact of the war on forests and the potential of ERS technologies to improve forest inventory in Ukraine.

"The Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA), since 1946, has conducted global and regional forest resource assessments to support decision-making by governments, civil society, and the private sector. These assessments rely on information provided by countries, but since 1990, they have been supplemented with an independent and thorough analysis of forest area and its changes, specifically using ERS methods. Therefore, this is extremely important for Ukraine," explained Ihor Budzinskyi, Head of the Forest Management and Reforestation Department of the State Forest Resources Agency.

He recalled that thanks to international cooperation, a team of Ukrainian specialists learned advanced ERS techniques in Paris in May 2025, which will help obtain consistent and high-quality data on Ukrainian forests.

"This international workshop is not just an exchange of experience and knowledge. It is about building bridges between our countries, institutions, and specialists who are united by a common goal: the preservation and sustainable development of Ukrainian forests in accordance with the best European and global standards," noted Mariana Ostrovska, Head of the International Relations, Science, and Public Relations Sector of the State Forest Resources Agency.

She thanked the Czech partners—the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ukraine, the Czech Development Agency, and the Forestry Institute of the Czech Republic—for their systematic support of Ukraine's forestry sector during the full-scale war, as well as for the Czech Republic's assistance in opening a modern computer laboratory for studying Earth remote sensing methods.

"It will become an important educational and scientific platform for Ukrainian foresters and students. Such practical assistance is a vivid example of the fruitful and long-term results of our international cooperation," Mariana Ostrovska concluded.
