European experience for Ukraine’s forests: State Forest Resources Agency discusses the implementation of the SFI project

The team of the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine held a working meeting with the management of the «Support to the Planning and Implementation of Multifunctional Sustainable Forest Management in Ukraine (SFI)» project.

The participants reviewed the interim results of the project, discussed current challenges, and outlined the next steps to ensure its successful implementation through September 2027.

Ukrainian and German experts discussed cooperation in several key areas within the project, including:

- improving forest legislation to harmonise it with EU standards, particularly in the field of forest monitoring using Remote Sensing (RS) technologies;

- further development of the National Forest Inventory (NFI) and Remote Sensing, as well as progress in applying these tools to strategic forest policy and administrative decision-making;

- sharing international experience in forest management planning, as well as in public forest administration based on the principles of close-to-nature forestry.

The implementation of the project will contribute to the further development of a modern forest management system, strengthen the institutional capacity of the forestry sector, and bring Ukrainian forest legislation and management practices closer to European Union standards.

The «Support to the Planning and Implementation of Multifunctional Sustainable Forest Management in Ukraine (SFI)» project has been under implementation since October 2024.

Its primary objective is to strengthen Ukraine’s capacity in forest policy development, advance the National Forest Inventory, improve public forest governance and forest management planning based on European, particularly German, experience. The project is part of the implementation of the provisions of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.
